Ah, the holidays

The in-laws arrived on Thursday evening and since then almost every moment of each day has been about food - shopping at Central Market, preparing to eat, eating, and then cleaning up. Tonight we're headed to III Forks, which I hear is quite good if you like steak. Unfortunately, the smell of meat is really starting to bother me (yes, I'm becoming one of THOSE kinds of vegetarians), so we'll see how it goes. I'll be wearing the new dress and coat that the nice personal shopper picked out for me at Nordstroms, so at least there's that.

Hardly doing any "Christmas-y" things, though I did enjoy the heck out of "White Christmas" last night. Bing Crosby is always fabulous and I love marveling at how small Vera Ellen's waist is. I've been baking fruit cakes, and all of the presents I bought are wrapped and under the tree, and sometimes I hear Christmas music and don't have the urge to vomit. I guess I haven't really enjoyed Christmas since Dad died, and I wonder if holidays really ARE harder once you've lost a loved one, or if they just seem harder because everyone says they should be. I do find myself thinking about him more, and missing him more, and I'm certain Mom feels the same way. I haven't watched "A Christmas Story" yet this year - it was always a thing for us to do together, and it always reminds me so much of the way he described his childhood. But it must be done - it's not Christmas without Ralphie

Greetings and Salutations

Today I have been very Alexander and the Horrible, Terrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, even though it is almost Christmas, I have a 5 day weekend, and essentially nothing to be very upset about. I threw an honest to god hissy fit this morning when John said I was letting the cold air into the bathroom, and stomped out of the house in my $29.95 knee high black boots (so trashy, but I love them dearly) and then I cried in my car all the way to work, again for no good reason. (I do love crying in the car, I must admit. It makes me feel so dramatic - something which I think I very rarely am in real life.)

I have about an hour left of work and everyone has been mentally checked out since Tuesday, so there's not a lick of work to be done. Which brings us here. I, a late adopter of all things technology related, have decided that today's the day to start myself a blog. Partying like it's 1997.

So, to get us started, I thought I'd steal an idea from one of my favorite Knowledge Management blogs (filed in my reader under "Professional," which makes me feel better about reading it at work), even though I wasn't tagged by any of the cool kids.

Here are 8 things you don't know about me:

1. When I was a kid, I would go on long road trips with my family every summer. As a result, I visited 46 of the U.S. states and saw each of the state capitals and most of the major universities/colleges. I've since been to Hawaii, but still need Alaska, North and South Dakota.

2. I am adopted and have never seriously considered looking for my birth parents.

3. I have never been in any real trouble. Never grounded, arrested, or even pulled over for speeding. (Okay, maybe this isn't so much of a surprise).

4. I have been waiting 147 days to get a tattoo due to a husband imposed 6 month waiting period. On January 23rd, I'll get my first (and possibly only) ink, the day before my 31st birthday. I am afraid to tell my mother.

5. I won "Best of Show" in my 8th grade science fair. For my project, I made kids fill out surveys about what they wanted to be when they grew up. My educational psychologist dad helped with me with the project. The only thing I remember about it is that the creepy kid at my school said he wanted to be a gynecologist, and it is for that reason that I only see female doctors.

6. I am simultaneously terrified by the idea of having and not having children. (Again, perhaps not much of a revelation).

7. My Dad committed suicide in June 2005. He thought he had Lou Gehrig's disease, but the professional consensus is that he did not.

8. So that we don't end on such a bummer note, here are a few of my very favorite things (new and old) - Harriet the Spy, Juno, Some Kind of Wonderful, headstands, the Pixies, Rock Band, my super cute puppy Miss Hannigan, Nancy Drew, libraries and book stores, swings, roller coasters, Innocent chocolate, the Alamo Draft House, Charlotte's Web, coffee, coconut cream pie. I could possibly go on for ever.

Anywho. We'll see where this goes.
